Where did Reiki originate?
The history of Reiki begins with Mikao Usui, who was born in 1865 in Japan. During his lifetime, he practiced Tendai Buddhism and studied Japanese martial arts. He is also known to have studied history, medicine and spiritual practices from other cultures, including Christianity.
In 1922 Mikao Usui went on a spiritual pilgramage to Mount Karum, which is near Kyoto, Japan. During this time of meditation and retreat, Usui had a profound experience during which he "received" or rediscouvered the healing system of Reiki.
Mikao Usui began imparting his spiritual experiences to others in the early 1900's. Usui developed his system of Reiki precisely because he wanted to share what he had discovered with others.
The 5 Principles
Just for today, I will not anger.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Just for today, I will work with diligence.
Just for today, I will be kind to others.
What can I expect from a Reiki session?
The average Reiki session is an hour in length. As the client rests, fully clothed, on a massage table the practitioner follows a series of hand positions over the body to promote energy flow through the 12 major meridians.
As the client experiences deep relaxation, it is common to be aware of various sensations throughout the body. These include heat/cold, tingling, pulsing and waves of energy. It is also quote common for the client to drift off to sleep.
How will I benefit from Reiki?
Reiki provides balance and healing to all four levels of the bodymind complex.
Physical benefits: arthritis, sciatica, back pain, sports injuries, migrane headaches, digestive distress, fatigue, allergies, sleep disorders and detoxification.
Mental benefits: improves focus, concentration, retention, relieves stress and decreases need for addictive behaviour
Emotional benefits: helps break down emotional blocks; decreases level of anxiety, anger, overwhelm, depression; helps to release stored emotional memory and trauma
Spiritual benefits: strengthens intuition, sense of self and personal connection to all things.
Is Reiki energy safe?
The Reiki system of healing utilizes the body's own innate ability to heal and therefore, is perfectly safe for people of all ages. This includes infants, children, pregnant women and people on various stages of dis-ease. It is also highly beneficial to animals.
Reiki is not a substitute for traditional allopathic medicine. It does, however, safely compliment these treatments.
How many treatments will I need?
The body's level of dis-ease will help determine how many treatments would be most beneficial. If a client presents with acute discomfort more frequent sessions are recommended initially to encourage the healing process and to relieve pain and inflammation.
Generally, one session every 4 - 6 weeks will have powerful and long lasting effects to keep the bodymind balanced and healthy. |
